An education experience unique to Sydney’s Inner West
“The Montessori method takes advantage of children’s natural need and desire to learn.”
School Governance
Our Constitution
The Inner Sydney Montessori School is owned and operated by the Inner City Montessori Association (ICMA), a non-profit company limited by guarantee. The parents who originally founded the school in 1981 established the company and the present members of ICMA are current school parents and wait-list parents.
Parents and other interested adults are welcome to apply for membership of ICMA. The membership fee is $70 per year. Members receive the Annual Report and may vote at the AGM.
The ICMA Constitution sets out the objects of the company and contains provisions regarding membership, general meetings, voting, the appointment and removal of directors, the powers and duties of directors, audits, accounts and other matters.
The ISMS School Council
The School Council is the governing body of ISMS and is comprised of directors elected from the ICMA membership and the School’s Principal.
Current members of the School Council are:
- Nicholas Economidis, President
- Bobbi Mahlab, Vice-President
- Nicole Pyner, Secretary
- Graham Spring, Treasurer
- Justin Baird
- Peta Gibson
- Gillian Larkins
- David Lyons
- Emanuel Perdis
- Wallace Scales
The School Council manages the School at the strategic, policy, corporate and financial levels. Council meets on the third Tuesday of every month, starting at 7.30pm in the school.
The AGM is held annually in March and tables the school’s financial statements for adoption. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Matters important to the school’s future are often discussed at the AGM.
The Principal is responsible for the day-to-day management of the School in accordance with the School’s vision and strategic plan, Montessori principles and values, and policies approved by Council. The Principal guides the School Council on, and is principally responsible for, educational policies and all matters relating to students, staff and the teaching, interpretation and application of the Montessori philosophy and method.
